The Aarhus Museum of Art is a solitary structure of red brick and glass. The idea was that the building, which has 10 floors, some below ground, should be something more than a collection of exhibition rooms. Softening the sharp form of the cubic design is the winding walkway that connects the levels. Walking through, the viewer is attracted to a series of functions and activities opened to them as they pass. The visitor can then choose to enjoy the throbbing life of the thoroughfare or step off to absorb themselves in the various art collections, in a more peaceful atmosphere.

Architect Schmidt, Hammer & Lassen K/S
"The philosophy of open and friendly Danish architecture dates back to design and handicraft of the 1940’s, based on humanistic ideals. Architecture should not create distance but involve people in the life lived in the building."
